1. USE DAWN DISH SOAP TO SCRUB BATHTUB AND SHOWER WALLS

If you have read some of my other articles, you will realize that I love using Dawn dish soap to clean. That’s because it’s great for cleaning purposes, not just only for dishes but a lot of other things/surfaces too.

To clean your shower with dawn just squeeze a few drops of dawn dish soap on a cloth(damp). Now use the cloth to scrub all over the shower.

Be sure to scrub in between the shower tiles and also to clean the tub, spout, and showerhead as well.

2. BORAX IS GREAT AT REMOVING DIRT MARKS AND SOAP SCUM

To remove soap scum, dirt, and grime from inside your shower with borax, all you need to do is the following.

Sprinkle a lot of borax inside the shower tub and use a brush to scrub all over(remember to sprinkle water inside the tub before sprinkling the borax this will make the borax wet and moist).

After your done scrubbing rinse the tub with a lot of water.

3. LYSOL WILL GIVE YOUR SHOWER A NICE SMELL

This actually works. What you need is a bottle of Lysol surface cleaner and a cloth. Pour some of the Lysol on the cloth.

Make sure the cloth is damp after pouring the Lysol on it, don’t pour too much because you don’t want to finish it. After doing use the cloth to wipe all over the shower.

Well, maybe not…

Especially if you have little ones or pets, you may have missed some gross spots you don’t even see anymore. It’s easy to have tunnel vision about our own house. We live with it day after day and sometimes it’s easier not to pay attention. Even if you do a spring cleaning you may miss some of those.

This is not about having a show home or that my house is super clean, I only mean this list as a guideline especially if you’re having people over you don’t know and you’d like to make a good impression. You want a home with a relaxed atmosphere but like it or not, guests will see things you don’t.

After helping host countless parties in other people’s homes here are 5 trouble spots that usually need attention even in the cleanest of homes:

1 – THE GUEST BATHROOM MUST SPARKLE

OK, I know, you cleaned the bowl and you wiped the counter…. but… did you clean the underside of the seat? How ’bout that area between the seat and the tank? And what about the gold mine of unmentionable goobies on the floor behind the back of the toilet?

Now, sit on the toilet, like a guest would. Look down. What do you see? Are the baseboards clean? Are the corners of the floors clean? Pick up these Clorox wipes and disinfect at the same time!

Now go wash your hands, and look up at the mirror. Really look at the mirror, Are there water or toothpaste spots?  I’ve wiped countless bathroom mirrors at other people’s homes. I always want to leave a place better than I found it….

Cleaning the guest bathroom is a must! Honestly, if your bathroom is clean and stocked a lot of other things can be overlooked.

2 – THE DOORS, DOOR HANDLES, AND LIGHT SWITCHES ARE OFTEN FORGOTTEN

Rarely do I go into a house with littles and find those items clean. Go right now, and look at your most-used light switch… I’ll wait.

Are you grossed out? I sure am when I wipe mine down. Same with the door handles. Go from the entry door and wipe all the door handles, on both sides of the door, and all the light switches. Don’t forget the ones in the kitchen, they’re often the worst ones.

That goes for the fridge handle too, and the kitchen cabinet doors! Those get greasy and gross. If your guests are going to be anywhere near the kitchen, get your microfiber cloth and take 10 minutes to wipe those cabinets down.

3 – DID YOU CLEAN THE WALLS?

One time my husband and I were cleaning the house to receive family and he noticed a fairly long grayish spot on the wall towards the baseboard next to the front door. “Where did that come from?”. I had to look and think. I stood there baffled for a minute. Then it came to me! That was one of my beloved dog’s favorite spots….. and she had been gone for 3 YEARS!!!!

After this incident, I started being much more aware of people’s walls. I remember going into an otherwise immaculate house one time with long, gray dog marks all over the walls! I’ve seen countless finger streaks also.

Even if you don’t have pets or little kids you probably have a wall that people grab on to while turning into a hallway. Look at it with discerning eyes and suddenly you may see all those disgusting handprints. Grab a magic eraser and make them disappear!

4 – WIPE THOSE DINING ROOM CHAIRS

I beg of you, wipe down the back of those chairs! Nothing will gross out a guest more than a sticky chair back.

Examine your chairs. The legs and those horizontal bars are often the targets of lots of splatters and spills and they don’t often get a lot of soapy water-style love.

That’s one of my hubby’s pet peeves.. sticky. He was the sticky monitor the whole time our kids were little. He probably wiped the chairs every day.

5 – THE COUCH CAN HIDE THINGS YOU DON’T WANT PEOPLE TO FIND

When guests come you really should vacuum the couch. And spot clean it. Don’t let poor Aunt Gladys sit in last month’s spit up or Princess’s hairball. Using a lint roller works wonders, although I wouldn’t be caught without my Dyson Animal vacuum.

I get it! I’ve had horrible, old couches that are impossible to clean. Then get inventive. Grab a clean quilt or a blanket. Heck, clean Batman sheets are better than grubby couch cushions any day.

I know, that’s technically more than 5 things, but one last piece of advice:

To clean your house for guests, you have to think like a guest.

Go outside your front door, close your eyes and take a deep breath. Now open the door and enter your house as if for the first time! Discover it. What do you see first? Move about the house, use the guest bathroom, sit in your dining room. Get a real sense of what a guest may see.

PERMANENT MARKER REMOVER

To remove permanent markers. Especially from erase boards and places you had no intention of them being.

Use Murphys and a magic eraser to wipe this away in a second. It is so convenient to have a Murphys at hand reach at all times.

DIY ALL- PURPOSE CLEANER

You can easily create your own all-purpose cleaner using Murphy’s oil soap as one of the main ingredients.

If you see you have insects coming in your house, and you know where there entering from, just create a mixture of hydrogen peroxide with the Dawn.

You can buy a spray bottle, or if you have a and empty bottle, just use that one. Spray it where ever the insects are, and if you see the insect, just spray them.

ICE PACK

Not all of us will have icepacks in our fridge just for emergencies.

You can make your own with Dawn and a ziplock bag. This will even work better than what you would buy and place in your fridge because it will hold the temperature longer and relieve the pain better till you can go to the hospital or till whatever pain stops.

STICKERS AND LABELS

If you have bottles that you want to re-use but the labels are hard to come off, and you don’t want to put things inside it with the wrong label on them because someone can use it for the wrong and bad things may happen.

Here is what you need to do, just wet the sticker with some Dawn and leave it for about 5 minutes, then go back and just wash it off with a sponge. The dawn will break down the glue.

WASH YOUR CAR

Grease will be on your car all the time, but you might not see it, but it’s there.

CLEAN CABINETS AND CUPBOARDS

Greasy cabinets are disgusting to look at. Especially if you have guests over. Greasy cabinets and cupboards are caused by frequent cooking in the kitchen. So if you don’t know how to get rid of the grease from them, there is an easy trick that can help you.

Squeeze 4 drops of dawn on a damp sponge then wipe the cabinets and cupboards. Be sure not to scrub them because this will damage the material on them. By doing this your cabinets and cupboards will look cleaner than before and also look like they were just installed.

This trick helped me to clean not just my cabinets but other items that had grease on them.

I don’t know about you, but I’m always shocked by how quickly the house can get messy!

Seemingly out of nowhere, we can wind up with a pile of dirty dishes, toothpaste splatters all over the bathroom sink and mirror, and paperwork everywhere.

After years of this, I finally figured out that if I just did some easy and quick tidying tasks every day, I didn’t ever have to spend an entire afternoon cleaning the house.

I think most of us mistakenly think that we will magically have more time in the future.

We tend to put off household tasks until that hypothetical future day when we will have magic time. When it comes to keeping the house tidy, simple consistent cleaning routines are key.

That way we can enjoy living in an orderly home on a daily basis.

Here are 6 things you can do every day to keep your house clean!

How to Keep Your Home Tidy ALL the Time

1. Run your dishwasher every night (and empty it every morning)

Whether it’s full or not, get in the habit of running the dishwasher and emptying it every day.

This way you can load every dirty dish into the emptied dishwasher throughout the day as you use them, instead of filling your sink.

Dishes can pile up so quickly, and really make your kitchen look messy!

I used to wait until my dishwasher was chock full before running it, and I’d take forever before I unloaded it.

If you have a small family or live alone, you could stretch this out to every other day or so of course.

The idea is to be proactive, and to have a place for the dirty dishes to go right away.

You’ll be surprised how little time it actually takes, especially when you stay on top of it!

You can quickly unload a dishwasher in less than 5 minutes, and you’ll just be placing your dirty dishes in it instead of the sink, so no added time there.

2. Process your mail as soon as you bring it in

Paper clutter is a huge source of messiness in many homes.

As soon as you bring the mail in, sort through it.

If you still get paper bills in the mail, open them and place in a designated place to be paid when ready.

For private and sensitive information you could either shred it, or I use this to hide personal information.

We have a basket in our pantry that collects all the junk mail and ads, and I just empty it into the paper recycling bin in a nearby church parking lot when it gets full.

Years ago, I used to be so bad at processing our mail that our energy company actually came out and turned off our electricity because we were behind on our payments.

The bills were buried in various stacks of random mail. That sure solved my mail-opening procrastination!

The bills exist whether we actually open them or not, and it’s just better to know what they are. Ignorance is not bliss!

3. Wash and put away one load of laundry every day

In our small household, I don’t quite need to do a load every day.

Granted, I’m not a perfectionist when it comes to sorting laundry and doing all sorts of different loads.

But one day I’ll do my laundry, another day my husband’s, another our towels, then our sheets, etc.

This way all day Sunday isn’t spent doing laundry. (Ugh, that sounds awful!)

The lovely thing about washing machines and dryers is that they do almost all the work for us.

I usually throw a load in the washer first thing in the morning, then later I put it in the dryer, and then later still I quickly fold it and put it away.

4. Make your bed

I incorporated making my bed into my ‘getting ready’ morning routine a couple years ago.

Before starting my makeup, I apply my No. 7 serum and eye gel (love that stuff!)

I like to give that a minute to soak into my skin, so while it’s soaking in, I make my bed.

I’d be surprised if it even takes me a full minute!

I don’t aim for absolute perfection, I just pull up the covers as smoothly (and quickly) as I can, and arrange the pillows.

It’s an instant facelift for the bedroom!

5. Tidy and wipe down the countertops

Since you already did your dishes and processed your mail, this should hardly take any time at all.

I love using disinfecting wipes (I get mine at Dollar Tree) for wiping down the countertops.

A spray bottle with a vinegar and water mixture and a washcloth or paper towel work just as well. 

Once you’re in the habit of doing this in the kitchen, add cleaning your bathroom counters to your routine as well.

6. Clean one small area

What you clean will change each time, but the idea is to do one extra cleaning task each day.

The task could be quickly dusting, cleaning the shower, Swiffering the kitchen and dining room, or basically whatever looks dirty on that particular day.

By taking care of one chore at a time, you’ll hopefully never feel buried by all your impending housework.
