You would think that a dog’s favorite person would be whoever gives them the most food and attention, right? While that is often the case, it’s not always that simple.

Maybe you have a friend or family member that your dog loves so much they would knock you over to get to them. Why is that? It turns out that there are several factors that can influence your dog’s decision about who their favorite person is. Here are a few of them. dog insurance commercial

Who they socialize with early is a big factor

Dogs have an important socialization period between birth and six months. This is the age where puppies’ brains are developing. Their brains are very receptive and the social experiences the dog has during this time can influence them for the rest of their lives. which best dog insurance

The person who is there during this period, who has more positive experiences with the dog at this period, can become the favored human. Sometimes, any person who resembles the human who was there during the socialization period can become favored.

As a side note, this is why it is important for dogs to be socialized to many different types of people during this period. It will help them be comfortable with more people later on.

Attention and affection improve bonds

Unsurprisingly, most dogs tend to bond with the person who gives them the most attention. They may also prefer the person who feeds them frequently. Dogs also will usually fall in love with the person who gives them the most physical attention and love. Lots of petting, brushing, massaging can cause a dog to love that person the most. Sometimes they will love the person who plays with them the most. Again, all dogs are different.

Positive associations are huge

Closely related to above, dogs can choose their favorites based on positive associations. The human the dog associates good, positive, warm feelings with will be the favorite. This might be the person who always has the treats, always plays games with and other reasons.

Humans With Dogs Just Like Them

Much like people, dogs are attracted to people who have a similar personality to them. A dog who loves to play and roughhouse will be attracted to the person who feels the same way. A dog who likes predictable, quiet time on the couch, will find the person who enjoys the same things.

Cats do not understand kisses the way we humans do as they show affection, perceive emotions and communicate differently from us. However, some cats may understand that kisses are their owner’s way of showing affection if done regularly.

Cats have unique personalities so how they perceive kisses and whether they like them will vary from one cat to another. Cats have their unique way of showing affection and that does not include kisses. You will know if your cat likes kisses through her response and body language. Signs that she likes them include the cat leaning forward, purrs and head bunts. If she turns away or swats at you, it is a clear message that she dislikes being kissed.

Signs that your cat loves kisses

These are signs that your cat loves kisses:

She blinks her eye slowly to show affection

She leans forward with her ears up

She is purring

She tolerates your kisses

She follows you around and hangs out with you

She rubs her head on you to show affection

She grooms you by licking your nose or face

She raises her tail and twines or wraps it around your legs or arms

How to know if your cat does not like kisses

She avoids or moves away from your kisses

She is aggressive and hissing

Her ears are back and she is irritated

She is swishing her tail which means she is frustrated, upset or annoyed

She swats at you

Do cats like to be hugged and kissed?

Cats do not necessarily dislike hugging and kissing but they also do not understand these gestures as we do.

Do cats know you love them?

Cats can sense your affection for them so in a way you could say they know you love them. Interestingly, cats release oxytocin or the love hormone when they interact with fellow cats and humans, just like we do.

Why do cats kiss you on the lips?

Cats may kiss you on the lips because she is intrigued with what you are eating, to show affection or as a result of memories from when they were just kittens. It is not advisable to allow your cat to kiss you on the lips for hygienic reasons.

Is it okay to kiss your cat?

Yes, it is okay to kiss your cat to show your affection but it is probably not a good idea to do it excessively. Cats do not really understand the gesture unless you have been doing it ever since she was a kitten. They also usually prefer brief interactions so a quick peck is enough. Let her come to you on her terms and do not force planting a kiss on her.

Avoid kissing your cat on the lips as cats rarely welcome being kissed there and may interpret that as an invasion of their space. It will take a strong bond with your cat before kisses are tolerated. Do not kiss a cat you only got to know recently as you will probably be met with aggression. Kissing a cat on the lips may also not be a good idea because they carry parasites, ringworm and bacteria.

Conclusion

Cats are usually receptive to their owners’ expressions of affection for them. Some cats tolerate and even like kisses while some will not. A cat tolerating or liking kisses does not mean they understand the gesture as they show affection and interpret emotions very differently from humans.

Ever wonder why every time you walk in the door your normally alpha dog rolls over and shows you her belly? When a dog presents her belly and neck in this situation, she’s expressing an ancestral trait rooted in wolf pack behavior that was used to communicate deference to other “alpha” dogs. Since that pack mentality likely isn’t present in her modern-day life, she’s now looking to you as the pack leader. Here are 5 reasons that will help you understand why your dog rolls over to show you her belly. teamwork dog training

Because They Love and Trust You

Happy dogs who show you their belly when you return home may be doing their best to let you know that they adore you. The entire body is relaxed and they’re in their most submissive posture waiting for some love.

Because They Respect You and Want You to Know it

Hierarchy means everything in the canine world. By purposely exposing her vulnerable underbelly, your dog is communicating to you that she comes in peace and recognized your alpha authority.

Because They Feel Totally Safe

Confident adult dogs in their own homes roll on their backs and get into a relaxed posture when taking naps – usually on the sofa or your bed.n

To Air Out

Although dogs attempt to regulate their body temperature by panting, some may park themselves next to circulating fans or air conditioner vents on hot days to catch the cool breeze on their bellies where there tends to be less hair in an attempt to cool down.

Because They Love Their Bellies Rubbed

Dogs’ bellies are very sensitive and their belly is the one place they normally can’t reach on their own. This is a sign of trust in you and it feels great for them!

There’s nothing more precious than the gentle meow of a cat, but sometimes this meowing could be an indication your cat wants to tell you something.

The reason cats meow is to express themselves and their emotions. You should pay attention to their meows so you know what they want. Here are 8 reasons cats meow at you.

1. To Get Your Attention

Kittens meow at birth so that their mother can hear and find them as they are born unable to see. As a cat gets older, they start reserving their meows, saving them for when they want attention for whatever reason. Here’s a fun fact about cats; they rarely meow at other cats, using them as a means to communicate with humans.

2. They Want to Go Outside

The meow to go outside is usually a sweet one that is still loud enough to get your attention. If they meow by the door or window ready to pounce on the outside world, then this meow likely means they’re ready to enter the great outdoors and go exploring.

3. Meowing at Midnight

Cats are known for sleeping a lot – sometimes up to 16 hours a day. It’s hardly surprising they can be at their most active during the night. If you hear some little meows during the night it’s a sign that your cat is up and ready to play with you, even though that may be the last thing you want to do that late at night.

4. They Want Food

Every single cat owner has heard the bellowing call for food. Cats never shy away from demanding what they want, especially when hungry. They will constantly meow at you and try to get your attention until you feed them. You should hurry to the store if you’re a little low on food.

5. Something is Bothering Them

No matter what it is that bothers them, you’ll know what their troubled meows are about. This signifies that they are distressed and frustrated, and possibly in some pain. Get to them as fast as you can because this is a sure sign they want and need your immediate attention.

6. Long, Drawn Out Meows

A prolonged and loud meow could be a sign that you’ve got one angry kitty to contend with. If they aren’t angry, then this meow is another way to convey distress and a need for assistance.

7. A High-Pitched Meow

A high-pitched sharp and sudden meow is used to quickly alert you to something. It’s the kind of meow you’ll get if you bump into them by accident or – worse – step on their fluffy little tails. This high-pitched meow is a sign that they are in pain or something got their attention. Keep an eye on where you’re walking to avoid having an angry cat on your hands.

8. Animal Instincts Trigger Chatty Meows

This kind of meowing sounds like your cat is attempting to use their magical feline powers to entrance something. Well, really, that’s kind of what’s happening. This kind of meow happens when your cat is by the window and has spotted something – such as a squirrel or bird – that’s got them excited.

We’ve all been there before. You’re lovingly stroking your cat, admiring their infinite beauty, when all of a sudden those claws come out and they react by way of razor sharp fangs. But have you ever wondered why does your cat bite you when you pet them? I’ve got the prime possibilities for you below.

Everything is on their terms, duh!

Your cat dictates their preferences, and we simply must follow suit. Obviously our cats do not have the ability to speak to us in a language in which we can understand. So when your cat bites you when you pet them, this is their way of saying that they’ve tired of what you’re doing. Your cat is easily stimulated, as their sense of touch is much more heightened than our own. If you’ve ever noticed that your cat bites you when you pet the base of their tail, this is because the nerve endings there are especially sensitive. Has your cat ever bit you when you’ve pet their belly? Well, that’s because cats do not like you to do that! Pretty much all cats can agree, do not pet my belly… that is, unless, you want your cat to bite you when you pet them!

Carefully watch your cat as you are petting them to assure that you are not causing them to become overstimulated. Cats are highly sensitive beings and remain on full alert at all times. When you are petting your cat, this should be something that relaxes them and does not stress them out.

Love bites, literally

While we would not bite our significant others to show them that we love them, we must remember cats are not humans. Your cat might ever-so-gently love bite you–without piercing through the skin–to show you that they care.

According to veterinary behaviorist Dr. Kelly Ballantyne:“Biting owners during petting is one of the most common behavioral problems of cats.”

But it’s important to remember one thing: never encourage your cat to bite you! Do not provoke rough play, and definitely do not punish your cat for reacting. If your cat bites you, simply stop engaging with them. Move your hand away and this will signal to them that playtime is over for the time being. One of the reasons that it’s important not to encourage bite play with your cat is because they will come to expect this as a part of their petting routine…which might not work out well when a guest or another member of the family pets the cat and gets attacked as a result.

Ever heard of pet-induced aggression in cats?

Never heard this term before? Well, now you have! Pet-induced aggression is an issue that develops when your cat relates touching with a negative experience. Cats are particular creatures with a sensitive nature no matter what breed they are. This overly aggressive form of biting is associated with fear, aggression, and their desire to be over territorial, and it can happen to any cat at any stage in their life.

CatHealth.com shares the warning signs of pet-induced aggression that you should be aware of:

suddenly tense body

dilated pupils

flattened ears

rippling back

twitching tail

For a cat owner, sometimes the hardest part of understanding and dealing with with pet-induced aggression is learning your cat’s limits when it comes to physical contact. Respect your cat, even if it means you don’t get to pet them as often as you would like. Learning how to interpret your cat’s body language can save you lots of cuts and bites, and make them much happier in the long run.

Ouch, Cat Bites Hard!

Play aggression is the most common type of aggressive behavior that cats direct toward their owners. Just as we mentioned above in reference to petting being strictly on their terms, a cat who was removed from its littermates early in life is at a disadvantage with no one to teach them limits with those sharp little teeth. Pepper was abandoned at an early age and discovered in a field as a tiny kitten before being taken in by the Houston SPCA. Because of this, establishing limits has been a bit trying when it comes to his biting. Play behavior is essential to a cat’s development, and without it, kittens grow into cats who do not know their limits.

But that is not the only factor that comes into play, literally speaking, in terms of play aggression. For a cat that spends several hours unattended to with no stimulation, play aggression can come as a direct result of boredom. Suddenly, your cat is chasing, pouncing, stalking, and attacking you. Guess that’s what you get for being gone all day long and leaving me all alone, human!

If you have the means to, perhaps consider adopting a cat friend for them to keep them company if you have a job that requires long hours. Despite how society attempts to condition our minds that cats are solitary beings, this is entirely untrue. Cats actually become quite lonely when left alone for extended periods of time and would much rather prefer to spend their time with others, humans and cats included.

Cat biting? Their might be an underlying health reason for it…

Pay close attention to when your cat tries to bite you when you pet them. Your cat doesn’t have the ability to tell you when they’re hurting, and it’s common knowledge that cats are the masters of hiding their pain. Just as with humans, when we are experiencing pain we do not want to be touched. If your cat once loved to be pet, and now they react by biting, this is a clear indication that something could be amiss with their health. Immediately take them in to see their vet so that they can be evaluated.

If you have a dog who barks incessantly for whatever reason – to be fed, at the mailman, because he’s bored, to get your attention – you’re probably wishing your dog had an “off” switch. Even if the barking doesn’t bother you, per se, you don’t want to be “that neighbor” with the obnoxious barking dog that everybody hates. So what can you do? Shouting at him to shut up rarely helps. Luckily, there is a way to get your dog to quit barking on cue.

It may help to teach your dog to “speak” first so that you can teach “quiet” on your own schedule. Otherwise, you’re stuck waiting for your dog to bark before you can work on training sessions. If that’s the case, make sure you always have treats handy so that you’re ready whenever the opportunity presents itself.

If you’ve used a clicker for training in the past, or want to start using one now, you’ll want to start by making sure your dog learns or remembers that the sound of a clicker means that a treat is coming. Start by just clicking and rewarding your dog without asking for any behaviors first, then work your way up to commands that your dog already knows before moving on to new things.

To teach your dog to “speak,” do something you know will trigger him to bark, such as ringing the doorbell. As soon as he barks, say “speak” and give him a treat. After doing this a bunch of times, just give him the command “speak,” and if he barks, reward him handsomely.

After asking your dog to “speak” or waiting until he decides to bark, say “quiet” while sticking a treat in front of his nose. As soon as your dog stops barking to sniff the treat, reward your dog (with or without clicking first) with a treat and verbal praise. Once your dog understands that stopping barking earns him treats, start giving him less time to quiet down before giving him the treat. For example, only give him the treat if he stops barking within 10 seconds. After that, start giving him less and less time to stop barking before you reward him with a treat.

Once your dog stops barking immediately upon hearing the “quiet” command, increase the amount of time you make him wait before rewarding him with a treat. Start with just a few seconds and gradually increase the wait time. Eventually, you should only have to reward him with treats periodically for being quiet after hearing the command. You should always give your dog verbal praise for following your commands.

Once your dog has this down pat, he’ll suddenly have an “off” switch for his barking!

Shedding is a completely natural process for dogs and other mammals. It’s how they get rid of damaged or older hair. Some breeds shed excessively in the spring as they lose their heavy winter coat. Dogs that stay indoors all year may shed at a uniform rate regardless of the season. If you brush your dog regularly or take him to the groomer, chances are good that he will shed less because old, damaged hairs will be proactively removed.

Understanding how to minimize shedding helps many pet parents deal more effectively with the problem. Still, other people are left wondering whether or not there are Shedless Dogs Breeds.dog health insurance

Unfortunately, you are unlikely to come across any dogs that don’t shed at all. However, there are dogs that shed so little that their parents are shocked to find the occasional, errant hair on their sleeve or the sofa. These breeds come in all shapes and sizes, so whether you prefer a small, medium or large dog, you’re bound to find one that will fit in with your family.

10. Australian Silky Terrier

As you may have already guessed, the ‘Silky’ has an elegant, silky coat that extends from head to toe.

Their favorite pastimes include being brushed (of course), playing, running, and being with their owner.

These are very active dogs, and they need daily stimulation or they may become bored and destructive.

The Silky are brave characters, often displaying their boldness and never showing any fear. However, even the bravest have time for play, and they are always looking for some fun.

Like most Terriers, they have a high prey drive, and can be noisy, as well as having a seemingly endless amount of energy. They are best suited for singles or families with older children.

9. Irish Water Spaniel

The Irish Water Spaniel was bred to specialize in (you guessed it) water. More specifically, hunting and retrieving birds over bodies of water.

While swimming is its specialty, so is pleasing its owners – which makes them wonderful companions.

Water Spaniels are the class-clown; their boundless energy and playfulness make them absolutely hilarious dogs that love attention. But once they settle down, they are ready to learn and are highly receptive to training. They can truly be your new best friend. dog health insurance

8. Giant Schnauzer

As you may have guessed, this is similar to a Miniature or Standard Schnauzer, but just 60 to 80 pounds heavier.

And with all that energy and playfulness, you’ve got your work cut out for you.

The Giant Schnauzer was bred to herd and guard, but also to be an intelligent companion. They are a working breed, and as such, they need a job or daily activities to keep them content.

7. Saluki

The Saluki is an elegant, thin, tall sighthound that has a silky, smooth and soft coat that does not shed. The Saluki is one of the oldest breeds in the world and is a devoted pet. Since the dog is graceful and catlike, it is not a dog that appreciates roughhousing, so homes with older children or only adults are best. The lifespan of the Saluki ranges from 12 to 14 years, and the dog’s coat is available in several colors including white, black, red, tan and multi-colored.

6. Maltese

Energetic and elegant, the perfect way to describe the Maltese.

A princess (or prince) that prefers the finer things in life and that often includes running, playing, and spending time with loved ones.

The Maltese become very attached to their owners, and they don’t like being left alone or else they may resort to barking and destructive behavior.

Maltese are incredibly intelligent but also impatient, so children and other dogs may annoy this breed. They may feel the need to protect their owners, which can lead to barking or biting.

5. Tibetan Terrier

Although it’s called a Terrier, they have no relation. They do, however, originate from Tibet, so at least they got that part right.

The Tibetan name for this dog is the Tsang Apso, which loosely translates to “shaggy dog”, which is fitting for its distinct thick long coat.

These beautiful beasts were bred for herding and working, and they love the outdoors.
Thousands of years ago, Tibetan Terriers were working dogs known as the “Holy Dogs of Tibet” and were highly valued and considered to bring good fortune. Mistreating their companions in ancient Tibet was believed to bring bad luck to the entire village.

4. Wheaten Terrier

The Wheaten Terrier is always on the lookout for fun; they love to run and play at a moment’s notice.

While they need a lot of daily activity, they’re also content for some daytime naps and cuddling.

That makes the Wheaten a great companion no matter where you live. They’re just happy to be with you and your family.

However, they do carry some of the typical Terrier traits: digging, chasing, and barking are common when bored. But getting into a routine of exercise and other activities will help curb bad habits (by keeping them too tired or occupied to misbehave).

3. Affenpinscher

This toy-sized dog typically lives for about 12 to 14 years and needs only occasional grooming. Agile and spunky, the Affenpinscher makes for a great companion. These intelligent dogs are frequently good with children, and they are happy to spend all of their time indoors as they have minimal need for exercise.

2. Basenji

Another small dog that lives about 12 to 14 years, the Basenji doesn’t require a lot of grooming. These dogs are intensely intelligent. Although they do not have a traditional bark, this doesn’t mean that they are without a voice. Aficionados of the breed called the Basenji’s unique crow a “yodel.” Basenjis need plenty of outdoor exercises, and they are also adept watchdogs.

1. Standard Poodle

This fantastic breed typically lives between 10 and 13 years. Good-natured and intelligent, the Standard Poodle makes a wonderful companion for any family. Their coat looks best when it receives daily brushing and clipping for each season. Poodles are also a good choice for people who have sensitive noses as the breed is known to be all but odorless.

Cats never cease to surprise their humans with their strange behaviors — and their random post-poop zoomies are no exception.

If this happens to your cat, you’re not alone. There are a lot of other cats who run away from their litter box after pooping — but there’s no straightforward answer as to why.

“There are many potential reasons why cats run after pooping, and it may be a combination of factors that prompt the behavior,” Amy Shojai, a certified animal behavior consultant in Texas, told The Dodo.

While there isn’t a definitive answer for why cats run after pooping, The Dodo spoke to Shojai to get the scoop on what behaviorists think could be happening.

He has poophoria

When a cat poops, it stimulates a nerve in their body that gives them a euphoric feeling, which might explain why your cat gets the zoomies.

The nerve that’s being stimulated is called the vagus nerve, and it runs from the brain throughout the body, including the entire digestive tract, Shojai said. “The nerve has multiple functions, such as reducing inflammation and also impacting feelings of stress, anxiety and fear.”

“Some experts speculate that defecation stimulates the nerve in some fashion that gives a sort of weird kitty ‘high’ that cats express with zoomies,” Shojai explained.

It’s his survival instincts

In the wild, a cat has a natural inclination to stay far away from the scent of elimination as a way to protect themselves against predators.

It might be because he thinks he smells another predator’s poop (when it’s his own), or he might think a predator can smell his poop, so he wants to get as far away from the scene of the crime as possible.

Even if you don’t think your cat’s poop has a scent, it’s actually really pungent for him — which makes his behavior all the more urgent. “We know that cats have highly developed scent sense, so what may be a mild aroma to us could be highly offensive to the cat,” Shojai said.

Pooping makes him uncomfortable

Your cat might run from the litter box because pooping is painful for him, so he wants to leave the location as soon as he’s done.

“Cats that feel discomfort during elimination (constipation, for example) may ‘blame’ the box,” Shojai said. “After they finish, they scoot away from the location, possibly associating the facilities with the discomfort.”

If your cat is constipated, he might strain while using the litter box or avoid his litter box altogether. If you notice these signs, or if your cat hasn’t pooped in more than three days, you should contact your vet ASAP.

He’s happy to relieve himself

“Another reason may be that the cat simply feels so darn GOOD after emptying that he has to run around in a joyful display,” Shojai said.

And if your cat is feeling well-rested, this might amplify his happiness, leading to the inevitable post-poop zoomies.

“Lots of cats indulge in ‘zoomies’ (crazy-running episodes) in the evening, probably due to napping all day and wanting to spend all that pent-up energy,” Shojai said. “If it coincides with a visit to the litter box, that may become a habit.”

Maine Coon cats are extremely popular and as an owner of four beauties, we understand exactly why they are. So why on Earth would we tell you not to buy a Maine Coon? You’d better keep reading to find out!

Here are 25 reasons that will make you want to own a Maine Coon:

They Are Too Beautiful As Kittens

Surely you agree? I mean, just look at those innocent expressions, not to mention those fabulous pointed ears. You will not get anything else done because you will spend all day admiring a Maine Coon kitten

Buy a Maine Coon kitten and you will not want to go out. You will find yourself making excuses to friends. You will call your boss and pretend you are sick so that you can stay at home.

If you buy a Maine Coon kitten, you will need a set of starter toys so you can play with it all day long. With a tunnel, a cat dancer, and a whole variety of smaller toys, this kitten toy assortment is great value for money.

They Grow Into Amazing Adults

Maine Coon looks only improve with age – they grow more beautiful by the day. You will not be able to concentrate on anything else in your life – be warned. You’ll continue to get nothing done.

Because of their stunning appearance, many people fear that Maine Coons will be stolen if they are allowed outside.

Reasons Not to Buy a Maine Coon

If you feel your neighborhood is not safe for a Maine Coon to roam in, make sure your home is suitable for a large indoor cat to expend its energy.

Adult Maine Coons require regular grooming to keep their coats free of knots. Their fur also picks up all sorts of things, especially if you allow them outside. This slicker brush works really wells for us.

There will never be a quiet moment

You will not find a more vocal cat than a Maine Coon. If they are not purring, they are trilling, meowing, and making other noises that they know you will find cute and irresistible – and you will.

A Maine Coon will have you talking back as if you understand it. You will act as if you know exactly what it is saying.

Their tails are a trip hazard

Maine Coon tails get under your feet; they stick them out to try to trip you up. You will also have to be careful all the time not to trap this furry appendage in anything.

Maine Coons tails are also a health hazard because they dangle them in your food and drink whenever they get the chance.

One more thing, if you tread on a Maine Coon’s tail, you will feel absolutely awful! So, you will need to take extra care if you ever own a Maine Coon not to step on its tail.

The other thing about their tails is they think they are hiding but often you will see a piece of tail protruding. They seem blissfully unaware of this! Very amusing.

You’ll waste hours grooming their manes

Maine Coons are like mini lions with their fancy neck ruffs. You will waste many hours trying to keep these looking pristine to find your cat licks itself afterward and ends up looking a scruffy mess again.

A Maine Coon’s neck ruff is just another thing to get matted and knotted which spoils their appearance, especially if they also get food stuck in it.

This area needs particular attention when grooming a Maine Coon.

People Might Think You Own a Lynx!

Why do Maine Coons have ear tufts and Lynx tips? They are strange, aren’t they? Most people find them endearing and they do look cute.

Not all Maine Coons have these Lynx-like tips on their ears. So don’t be disappointed if you get a Maine Coon and it turns out to be lacking somewhat in the ear fur department.

They Have Weird Fluff Between Their Toes

Maine Coons have tufts of fur sprouting from between their toes and these are adorable but if your Maine Coon goes outside it will also track in a lot of wet and dirt.

This is obviously soon cleaned off by your carpets or your crisp white bed linen … convenient for your Maine Coon, not so convenient for you if you’re house proud.

They Wear Mad Furry Britches

Just look at that furry rear end! it really does look like an old-fashioned pair of britches. Owners often need to intervene with keeping all this fur in order and it isn’t always easy.

A regular grooming regime is a must and is best started when the cat is young or it may not ever let you do this.

Their Eyes Will Bewitch You

They will mesmerize you with their eyes. Some have odd eyes that are even more hypnotic.

Be careful or you will find yourself doing exactly what a Maine Coon wants you to with no control over your actions. Here’s a complete guide to Maine Coon eyes.

Could you trust a cat that looks at you like this?

Children Find Them Irresistible

Maine Coons are patient cats and show a great tolerance of babies and children. However, you should supervise kids and cats at all times.

The majority of problems with Maine Coons and children arise when children are too rough with them. If you were pulled around or tormented relentlessly you would probably lash out eventually.

Maine Coons are gentle cats but they are not saints and do have a limit to what they will tolerate. it is important to teach children to be gentle with them and treat them lovingly.

They Prefer To Live With Other Cats

If you’re getting a Maine Coon it’s actually best if you can get two. This can work out quite expensive. If you can’t afford two Maine Coons, consider having another cat of any breed for it to socialize with.

You’ll often see genuine affection between two Maine Coons.

And Maine Coons are happy mixing with another breed.

They Adore Dogs

Maine Coons tolerate dogs who understand their place. They will be in charge of any dog and will only like one if it does as it’s told.

They Think They Own You

It’s funny how you think you are going to be a Maine Coon owner. Let’s get this straight – a Maine Coon will own you. I’m sure they have all carefully read a Cat’s Guide to Owning a Pet Human.

You will be a slave to one from the moment it moves in and takes over your house. “Other human in the house, bring her more wine … she is not allowed to move from this spot until I decide to move.”

They Steal Your Bed

Your bed will no longer be your own. A Maine Coon generally wants to sleep with you or keep you awake. It will lay on your legs and you will be stuck in an uncomfortable position because you don’t want to disturb the cat.

Sleeping in on your day off will become a distant memory … Maine Coons like to breakfast early.

An excellent way to ensure you get a lie-in is to invest in an automatic feeder. This will also come in handy if you occasionally spend a night away.

They Steal The Best Seats In The House

There’s a well known saying among cat owners: “If you want the best seat in the house you’ll have to move the cat.” You will find this is true if you own a Maine Coon.

You probably shouldn’t waste your money on an expensive cat bed but if you can’t resist buying one, here are our favorite cat beds reviewed.

Just recently, I spotted this fabulous heated bed which is perfect for chilly days and saves you having to leave your central heating on for your cat all winter.

They’re Not Always Lap Cats

As it happens some Maine Coons are lap cats and some aren’t. If you want a cat that is always on your lap you may be disappointed.

On the other hand, you might be lucky and find yours is a cuddly cat.

Our last two didn’t sit on our laps for over a year but our patience paid off and eventually, they chose to sit on our laps once we stopped trying to persuade them.

They Might Never Leave You Alone

Some Maine Coons love to cuddle. You’ll be pinned down all evening and will be forced to watch TV whilst everyone else in the house runs around doing things for you such as fetching you wine, tea, coffee, and snacks.

So annoying! You’ll be surprised at how long you can hold on when you need to go to the bathroom!

They Always Want To Play

You will be worn out if you get a Maine Coon. They never tire of playing, even in their senior years. There will be no more lounging around doing nothing for you.

Oh no, you will be on all fours with a piece of string, rolling balls, and teaching your Maine Coon how to use a scratching post.

If you want an idea for a toy to entertain your Maine Coon, there’s one that has worked consistently over the years for us and that’s a Cat Dancer. It is inexpensive and easy to use – you can even stay in your chair!

They Think Your Boxes Are Their Boxes

If you ever have to unpack a box, a Maine Coon will be there waiting to claim it the moment it is empty. Like all cats, they love boxes.

And you will not be allowed to have it back even if you need to return the item. That box will no longer be available for your use. Don’t ever expect to have it back.

They’re Expert Hunters

Maine Coons are often accomplished hunters. This is actually normal not naughty cat behavior. You can’t really stop it and you shouldn’t punish one for doing it.

Of course, indoor cats don’t get to hunt unless your house happens to be full of mice.

So bear in mind this particular skill before buying a Maine Coon. Can you cope with having an accomplished hunter in your home?

21. They Sleep Quite A Lot

This cat is not asleep, he is having a long blink.

Many people wonder why Maine Coons sleeps so much and if it’s normal behavior.

As Maine Coons get older they can become quite lazy and seem to sleep all day long.

It will be your job to keep your cat active and therefore healthy. If you don’t see yourself doing this, maybe a Maine Coon is not for you.

If a young Maine Coon sleeps a lot, this is a sign of boredom – entertain it more!

They Are Often Funny

They are funny, so if you want a ‘normal’ cat, a Maine Coon is not for you. Maine Coons will have you in stitches so if you don’t have a sense of humor you may not appreciate one of these comical cats.

They Have Amazing Personalities!

They have huge personalities. You may have heard people say Maine Coons are almost dog-like. This is true.

They display many characteristics usually associated with dogs. Some play fetch, some greet their owners at the door.

They often announce their arrival in a room with a trill. They almost sulk when you go out and will show you how much they have missed you when you return.

They Like to Join In Your Activities

Maine Coons are always in the way. They will sit on your keyboard (computer or piano). They love to sleep in basins which creates a problem when you want to wash your hands.

Conclusion

We adore Maine Coons. We treat ours like children. They are extremely rewarding cats to own. We just want everyone who wants a Maine Coon to be prepared and be absolutely sure they are ready to be good Maine Coon owners. Hopefully, you are.

If you own a Maine Coon or any other pet, don’t forget to consider pet insurance to cover any unexpected vet bills which can soon mount up.

You walk into the shelter, lock eyes with “the one” and the next thing you know, you’re frolicking through fields of freshly mowed grass and endless tennis balls with your true love. Except, how are you supposed to know which breed is going to be your best match (or if your current four-legged friend is your ultimate counterpart)? Turn to the stars, of course. Here, the best dog for every zodiac sign.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20): THE FRENCH BULLDOG

You’re full of surprises, dear Pisces, and the same goes for this pointy-eared pooch. He packs a huge personality into such a small bundle, and, like you, his knack for reading and adapting to emotions and making sure others around him always wear a smile are unmatched by any other breed.

ARIES (MARCH 21 – APRIL 19): GERMAN SHEPHERD

Courageous, determined and fierce: You’re often considered the strongest zodiac sign of the bunch, and the same can be said for this watchful, obedient and intelligent breed. We guarantee you’ll get along like two peas in a pod.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20): SIBERIAN HUSKY

You’re probably looking for a pup that’s strong and energetic to match your active lifestyle, and what better breed than the husky, which hails from Arctic sled dogs? Just like you, they’re resilient under pressure but also extremely compassionate and caring (except when it comes to chewing on the pillows, of course).

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 20): WEIMARANER

You need a breed that’s going to keep up with you, speedy Gemini. These hunting dogs are not only fast (and love a good game of fetch) but also extremely intelligent and communicative. You’ll be reading each other’s minds in no time.

Pensive and dignified, the Chow Chow can often be considered aloof.
